Irregular galaxy

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most galaxies have a very clear shape. Some look like spinning spirals or smooth ovals. Irregular galaxies are different because they lack a distinct shape. They do not have a central bulge or spiral arms. These galaxies often look quite chaotic to us. They do not fit into the regular Hubble sequence. Scientists think they make up about one quarter of all galaxies.

How does a galaxy become irregular? Sometimes they start as spiral or elliptical galaxies. An uneven pull from gravity can deform their shape. This happens when they pass near a larger neighbor. Other irregular galaxies form during big galaxy collisions. These collisions can merge two galaxies into one messy shape. Some might even be young galaxies just starting out. They are often small, about one tenth the mass of our Milky Way. However, some large ones like UGC 6697 exist.

Astronomers group these galaxies into three main types. The first type is called Irr-I. These have a little bit of structure. Some are called Sm galaxies because they have tiny spiral parts. Others are called Im galaxies because they have no spiral parts. The second type is Irr-II. These have no clear structure at all. They are often shaped by mergers or collisions. The third type is the dwarf irregular, or dIrr. These are much smaller than the others.

Dwarf irregulars are very important to study. They have high levels of gas and dark matter. They also have a low level of metallicity. Because of this, they might be like the very first galaxies. They may look like the faint blue galaxies found in deep surveys. In our own Local Group, many irregulars are distant dwarf galaxies. For example, the Small Magellanic Cloud is an Im type. The Large Magellanic Cloud is now called a barred Magellanic spiral.

Making new stars is a common thing in these galaxies. The way stars form is the same as in other galaxies. However, the way it happens is a bit different here. They do not have density waves to help. Instead, the random movement of gas helps make stars. Massive stars and giant HII regions also play a part. These regions affect the space between the stars. This makes irregular galaxies great places to study star formation.
