A dwarf galaxy is a small collection of stars. While our Milky Way has 100 to 400 billion stars, a dwarf galaxy might have only 1,000 stars. Some larger ones contain several billion stars.

The Large Magellanic Cloud is a famous example. It orbits our Milky Way very closely. It contains over 30 billion stars. Some scientists call it a dwarf galaxy, but others think it is a full galaxy.

These small galaxies change based on where they live. Big galaxies can pull on them with gravity. This pull can rip a dwarf galaxy apart or create stellar streams. Sometimes, dwarf galaxies form when two large galaxies collide. These are called tidal dwarf galaxies.

They are made when gravity pulls material away from the parent galaxies. Other dwarf galaxies form from gas in the early universe. NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer found some forming in the Leo Ring. This is a cloud of gas near two huge galaxies.

Astronomers have found many different types of these small systems. Blue compact dwarf galaxies, or BCDs, are very bright. They contain large clusters of young, hot, blue stars.

These galaxies use up their gas very quickly to make stars. They also cool down as they build new matter. There are also ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. These are the faintest galaxies in the universe. They have only a few hundred to 100,000 stars.

They are also filled with a lot of dark matter.

Some dwarf galaxies are incredibly dense. These are called ultra-compact dwarf galaxies, or UCDs. They were discovered in the 2000s. They are only about 200 light years across.

A UCD named M60-UCD1 is 54 million light years away. Its stars are packed 25 times more densely than stars in our part of the Milky Way. Some UCDs in the Virgo Cluster might even have supermassive black holes. These black holes can weigh up to 18% of the galaxy's mass.

Many dwarf galaxies live in our own Local Group. They often orbit big galaxies like the Milky Way or Andromeda. There are more than 20 known dwarf galaxies orbiting the Milky Way. Some, like the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy, help scientists test how the universe works. Even the huge Omega Centauri cluster might be the core of a swallowed dwarf galaxy. These small neighbors help us understand the history of the whole universe.
