The Local Group is the collection of galaxies where we live.

It is a special neighborhood in the vastness of space. This group has a shape that looks like a dumbbell. One side of the dumbbell holds the Milky Way and its smaller neighbors. The other side holds the Andromeda Galaxy and its satellites. These two large collections are separated by a huge distance. They are actually moving toward one another right now.

Gravity is the force that keeps this group together. The mass of the Local Group is mostly made of the Milky Way and Andromeda. These two giants have about 100 billion solar masses each. The total mass of the whole group is around 2 trillion solar masses. This huge amount of mass pulls everything toward the center. The center is located about 0.5 megaparsecs from the Milky Way. This spot is slightly closer to the Andromeda Galaxy.

Humans have been studying these galaxies for a long time. A scientist named Edwin Hubble introduced the term "Local Group" in 1936. He wrote about it in his book called The Realm of the Nebulae. He described it as a small group of nebulae. At that time, he listed several members like M31 and M33. He also mentioned the Milky Way and the Large Magellanic Cloud. His work helped us understand our place in the universe.

There are many different kinds of galaxies in our group. We currently know of 134 members within 1 megaparsec of the center. Most of these are dwarf galaxies, which are much smaller. The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-largest member of the group. It is a spiral galaxy with a mass of about 100 billion solar masses. Andromeda is the largest with a diameter of 152,000 light-years. The Milky Way is the second largest in the group.

Our Local Group is just one small part of something much bigger. It is part of a structure called the Local Volume. This sits inside the even larger Virgo Supercluster. The Virgo Supercluster is part of the Laniakea Supercluster. This is one of the greatest structures in the known universe. It even includes the Pisces–Cetus Supercluster Complex. Space is organized into these massive, connected layers.
