Lagoon Nebula

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Lagoon Nebula is a huge cloud of gas in space.

It is also called Messier 8 or M8. This nebula is an emission nebula. This means it glows with its own light. It is an H II region in the Sagittarius constellation. This nebula is a very important place. It is a place where new stars are born.

This nebula works like a giant star factory. Inside, gravity pulls gas together to make stars. We can see this happening in the Hourglass Nebula. This is a structure in the very center. In 2006, scientists found four Herbig–Haro objects there. These objects show stars are growing by taking in more matter. This is called an accretion process. A hot O-type star also helps shape the cloud. It uses ultraviolet radiation to make a funnel shape.

People have studied this cloud for a long time. Giovanni Hodierna first discovered it in 1654. It is a very special sight in the night sky. It is one of only two star-forming nebulae you can see with just your eyes. The other one is the Orion Nebula. The famous astronomer John Herschel named the Hourglass Nebula. E. E. Barnard also found dark shapes called Bok globules. These are cataloged as B88, B89, and B296.

This nebula is incredibly large and far away. It sits about 4,000 to 6,000 light-years from Earth. The cloud spans 110 by 50 light-years. In our sky, it looks like 90' by 40'. It also holds a young group of stars called NGC 6530. Long photos show the nebula as pink. But it looks gray through a telescope. This is because our eyes have low color sensitivity in the dark.

You can think of the nebula as a busy cosmic nursery. Just as babies grow in a home, stars grow here. The nebula has many different parts and shapes. Some parts look like funnels or hourglasses. It is a very active part of our galaxy. You can find it by looking toward the Sagittarius constellation. It reminds us how much is happening in the deep parts of space.
