The Eagle Nebula is a huge cloud in space.

It is also called Messier 16 or NGC 6611. Some people call it the Star Queen Nebula. This name comes from dark shapes in the center. These shapes look like a queen in silhouette. The nebula sits in the constellation Serpens. It is located in the Sagittarius Arm of our Milky Way galaxy. This area is very important because it is a place where new stars are born.

This nebula works like a nursery for stars. It is an emission nebula made of gas and dust. The tall columns are called the Pillars of Creation. These pillars are made of hydrogen gas and dust. They act like incubators for new stars. Inside the columns, there are small knots of gas. Scientists call these EGGs, which stands for evaporating gaseous globules. These little pockets help new stars grow. Some stars are forming right now inside these EGGs.

People first found this nebula a long time ago. Jean-Philippe de Cheseaux discovered it in 1745 or 1746. Later, Robert Burnham Jr. gave it the name Star Queen Nebula. In 1995, Jeff Hester and Paul Scowen used the Hubble Space Telescope. Their images helped us understand how the nebula works. The Hubble Space Telescope even took new pictures in 2014. These images showed how the pillars are slowly evaporating. These tools help us see things that are very far away.

The nebula is about 5,700 light-years away from us. It contains a cluster of about 8,100 stars. One star is very bright and is named HD 168076. This is actually a binary star made of two stars. It has a mass of 80 solar masses. It is one million times brighter than our Sun. There is also a long spire of gas in the northeast. This spire is 9.5 light-years long. That is about 90 trillion kilometers!

Space can be a very busy and changing place. Scientists once thought a supernova might destroy the pillars. A supernova is a huge star explosion. They thought an explosion happened 8,000 to 9,000 years ago. However, new images show the pillars are still safe. They will likely exist for 100,000 more years. The pillars look like stalagmites in a dark cave. This is a way to picture how they rise from the floor. It helps us imagine these giant shapes in the dark of space.
