Messier 4 is a huge group of stars.

Scientists call this a globular cluster. It is a round ball of many stars. This cluster is very close to our Solar System. It sits about 6,000 light-years away. This makes it the closest cluster of its kind to us. It is located in the constellation of Scorpius.

Finding this cluster is quite easy. You can look for the bright star Antares. Messier 4 is only 1.3 degrees west of that star. In a small telescope, it looks like a fuzzy ball. It appears to be the same size as the Moon. Larger telescopes can see the individual stars inside. Some stars in the cluster are very bright. At least 43 variable stars live there too.

People have studied this cluster for a long time. Philippe Loys de Chéseaux found it in 1745. Later, Charles Messier put it in his catalog in 1764. It was the first cluster where people saw single stars. William Herschel saw a bar shape in the middle in 1783. In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope took new photos. These photos showed very old white dwarf stars. Some of those stars are 13 billion years old.

This cluster tells us about how stars form. It has a low metallicity. This means it has less iron than our Sun. The iron level is only 8.5% of the Sun's level. This suggests the cluster had two different phases of star formation. The stars may have two different ages. The cluster also moves around the Milky Way. It travels in an orbit that takes it near the galactic core.

Scientists are looking for a mystery in the center. They think there might be an intermediate-mass black hole there. In 2023, researchers used data from the Hubble Space Telescope. They also used data from the Gaia spacecraft. They found extra mass in the middle of the cluster. This mass is about 800 times the mass of our Sun. It might be a black hole. It could also be a tight group of small, heavy stars.
