Sagittarius B2

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sagittarius B2 is a giant cloud of gas and dust. It sits near the center of the Milky Way galaxy. This cloud is one of the largest in our galaxy. It spans a huge area in space. The total mass is about 3 million times the mass of the Sun. It is very dense for a cloud in space. The hydrogen density is 3000 atoms per cubic centimeter.

This cloud works like a giant factory for stars and molecules. It has three main parts called cores. These are the north, middle, and south cores. The north and middle cores are busy making new stars. Within these cores, scientists found H II regions. These are areas of hot gas named A through J. Region K is in the north core. Region H is in the south core.

Scientists use special tools to study the cloud's chemistry. They use a spectrograph to look for amino acids. They found many complex molecules there. Some are types of alcohol like methanol and ethanol. They also found an ester called ethyl formate. This ester gives raspberries their flavor. Some people think the cloud might smell like raspberry rum.

Tiny dust grains help the chemistry happen. These grains have a silicon core. They also have a layer of water ice. Because the cloud is cold, atoms move very slowly. The dust grains act like a surface for atoms to meet. Molecules stick to the grains and react. Then they evaporate back into the cloud.

Many discoveries happened using big telescopes. About half of all known interstellar molecules were found near this cloud. In 2011, Japanese astronomers used the Suzaku satellite to look at the center. They saw X-rays from a huge burst of energy. This burst came from a black hole called Sagittarius A*. It happened about 350 years ago. The James Webb Space Telescope also found new star areas.
