Sagittarius B2

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Sagittarius B2 is a giant cloud in space. It is made of gas and dust. This cloud sits near the center of our galaxy. It is one of the largest clouds in the Milky Way. It is very heavy. It weighs 3 million times more than our Sun.

The cloud has three main parts called cores. These are the north, middle, and south cores. The north and middle cores make many new stars. This cloud is also a place for chemistry. It has many complex molecules. Some of these are types of alcohol. One part is called ethyl formate. This is the same thing that gives raspberries their flavor.

Tiny bits of dust help make new things. These are cold dust grains. They have a core of silicon. They also have a layer of water ice. Molecules stick to these grains. This helps them change into new things.

Scientists use tools like the James Webb Space Telescope to study it. They can see light from the cloud. They also see X-rays. These X-rays come from a big black hole. The black hole sent out a huge burst of energy. This happened about 350 years ago.
