R136 is a very crowded group of stars.

It sits at the center of the NGC 2070 star cluster. This cluster is found inside the Tarantula Nebula. This nebula is part of the Large Magellanic Cloud. R136 is known as a starburst region. This means it has many young and huge stars. These stars create most of the energy in the nebula. This energy makes the whole nebula visible to us.

This place works by packing stars very close together. The central part of R136 is only 2 parsecs across. A parsec is a way to measure space. Within just 5 parsecs of the center, there are 72 special stars. These include 32 very hot O-type stars. There are also 40 other O stars and 12 Wolf-Rayet stars. Wolf-Rayet stars are extremely bright and hot. R136 has 200 times the density of a normal star group. This high density makes it a very special place.

Scientists have learned more about R136 over time. It was once called RMC 136 in an old catalogue. People also knew it as HD 38268. Later, it was called Wolf-Rayet star Brey 82. It was first seen as one single object. Later, researchers resolved it into three parts. These parts were named R136a, R136b, and R136c. Using a tool called speckle interferometry, they saw more detail. Now, they know R136a has as many as 24 parts.

There are many amazing numbers found in R136. The total mass is about 450,000 solar masses. This means it weighs as much as 450,000 suns. The cluster is very young, at less than 2 million years old. Because it is young, no stars have exploded as supernovas yet. The star R136a1 is one of the brightest. It is 291 times the mass of our sun. It is also 7,244,000 times more luminous than the sun.

You can think of R136 as a busy city of stars. Most star groups are like quiet towns with lots of space. R136 is much more crowded and energetic. It is like a bright light in the middle of a dark room. The stars here act like engines for the Tarantula Nebula. They push energy out into the gas clouds around them. In the future, this group might become a globular cluster. These are large, round groups of many stars.
