LBV 1806−20 is a very bright star.

It sits far away near the center of our galaxy. This star is very big. It has a mass of 36 solar masses. This means it is 36 times heavier than our Sun. It is also very bright. It shines two million times more than the Sun.

We cannot see it with our eyes. Thick dust in space hides the star. This dust blocks most of its light. Less than one billionth of its visible light reaches us. Scientists use infrared telescopes to see it.

These tools look for heat light instead of visible light. This is because dust absorbs 35 magnitudes of light at visual wavelengths.

Some people think it is a binary star. A binary star is two stars joined together.

This might explain why the star seems so strange. It sits in a large group of stars. This group is called an open cluster. This cluster is part of W31. W31 is one of the largest H II regions in the Milky Way.

Scientists first found this star in the Sagittarius constellation.

At first, it seemed like the most massive star known. This made it a hard job for scientists to understand. Now, recent estimates place it closer to Earth. This means it fits within the expected range for bright stars. It is at the core of the radio nebula G10.0–0.3. The star's wind likely powers this nebula.

The star might be a luminous blue variable. This is a star that changes in brightness.

We call it a candidate because we have not seen these changes yet. Its light shows lines of hydrogen and helium. It also shows lines of iron, magnesium, and sodium. Some of these lines look doubled. This is one reason scientists think there are two stars. The star's type is likely between O9 and B2.
