Arp 220

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Arp 220 is a very special place in deep space. It is the result of two galaxies hitting each other. These two galaxies are now in the middle of merging. This means they are joining together into one. It is the 220th object in the Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. This atlas was made by Halton Arp.

This galaxy works in a very busy way. The crash of the two galaxies causes a starburst. A starburst is a huge burst of new star birth. This happens because the merging galaxies trigger it. Most of the energy comes from this starburst. Most of the light is far-infrared light. We cannot see this light with our eyes.

Many tools have helped us learn about Arp 220. The IRAS tool discovered its bright infrared light. In 1984, it showed how much energy the galaxy has. The Hubble Space Telescope looked at it in 1997 and 2002. It used the ACS and NICMOS tools. These tools saw more than 200 huge star clusters. One cluster has enough material for 10 million suns.

There are many amazing facts about this system. It is 250 million light years away from Earth. This makes it the closest ultraluminous infrared galaxy to us. Astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory found organic molecules there. They also found two bright maser sources. These are an OH megamaser and a water maser. In October 2011, scientists saw seven supernovas at once. This was a record for how many happen at the same time.

Arp 220 helps us understand how the universe grows. The merging of the galaxies began 700 million years ago. This process might create a supermassive black hole. Such a black hole could power an active galactic nucleus. This is a bright center at the core of a galaxy. Scientists use the Chandra and XMM-Newton satellites to study this. They want to see the link between mergers and these bright cores.
