The crash makes many new stars. This is called a starburst. A starburst is a sudden burst of star birth. Arp 220 is very bright. Most of its light is far-infrared light. This is light we cannot see with our eyes. It is 250 million light years away.

Scientists see many huge star clusters in the center. One cluster is as big as 10 million suns. There may be an active galactic nucleus at the core. This is a bright center powered by a black hole. Experts also found organic molecules there. In 2011, they saw seven supernovas at once. A supernova is a star that explodes. This is a record for how many can happen at once.
