Two large star groups are crashing into each other. We call these the Antennae Galaxies.

They live in the Corvus constellation. Long tails of stars and gas fly out from them. These tails look like insect antennae. This is how they got their name.

This crash is a big event. Clouds of gas and dust hit each other. This makes many new stars grow very fast. This is called a starburst phase. The crash also makes globular clusters. These are big groups of young stars. Most old star groups are 12 billion years old. These new ones are much younger.

The two groups are joining into one. Their centers will meet soon. They will become one giant galaxy. This might happen to our Milky Way one day. Scientists think they will become an elliptical galaxy. This is a galaxy shaped like an oval. The crash also makes heavy parts like magnesium. These parts help make planets.
