Antennae Galaxies

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Antennae Galaxies are a pair of star groups crashing together. They live in the constellation Corvus. These two groups are also called NGC 4038 and NGC 4039. They look like they have long tails of stars and dust. These tails look just like the antennae on an insect. This is how they got their special name.

This crash is a very busy time for the galaxies. They are in a starburst phase right now. This means they are making new stars very fast. This happens when clouds of gas and dust hit each other. The collision creates shockwaves in the clouds. These shockwaves squeeze the gas into tight, dense spots. These spots are the birthplaces of new star clusters.

We have known about these galaxies for a long time. William Herschel first discovered them in 1785. Scientists use models to understand how they change. A scientist named Alar Toomre helped develop these models. He looked at how the galaxies merge over time. This is called the Toomre sequence. It helps us see how galaxies grow and change.

These galaxies have a very long history. About 1.2 billion years ago, they were two separate groups. One was a barred spiral and one was a spiral. They began to move toward each other 900 million years ago. They passed through each other 600 million years ago. Today, their centers are joining into one big core. They will likely become an elliptical galaxy soon.

Many amazing things happen in these galaxies. The Chandra X-ray Observatory found heavy parts like magnesium and silicon. These parts are needed to make planets. There are also many exploding stars called supernovae. For example, SN 2007sr was found in 2007. We might even see a crash like this one. There is a 50 percent chance our Milky Way will hit the Andromeda Galaxy.
