The Sculptor Galaxy is a huge and bright group of stars.

It is also called NGC 253 or the Silver Coin Galaxy. This galaxy is a starburst galaxy. That means it is making new stars very quickly. It sits at the center of the Sculptor Group. This is a group of galaxies near our own Milky Way. It is one of the brightest galaxies in our part of space. Only the Andromeda Galaxy and the Sombrero Galaxy are brighter.

This galaxy works in a very busy way. Scientists think a small galaxy crashed into it 200 million years ago. This collision moved the gas and dust around. The movement started the current starburst. Now, many new stars are forming in the center. These stars form huge clusters. Some of these clusters have a mass of 10,000 solar masses. Other clusters are even bigger but are hidden by dust. Massive stars also create a superwind. This wind blows material out into the galaxy's halo.

People have studied this galaxy for a long time. Caroline Herschel first discovered it in 1783. She found it while searching for comets. Later, John Herschel looked at it with a large mirror. He said it was a superb and bright object. In 1961, Allan Sandage studied its shape. He found that dust patterns are very important here. The dust makes the spiral arms look complex. In 1998, the Hubble Space Telescope took a very clear picture. This helped us see the details of the star birth.

There are many interesting facts about NGC 253. A supermassive black hole lives in its center. This black hole is 5 million times heavier than the Sun. This is slightly heavier than the black hole in our galaxy. The galaxy is about 10.89 million light years away.

In 1940, Fritz Zwicky found a supernova there. A supernova is a dying star that explodes. In July 2024, a new nova was found by BlackGEM. A nova is also a bright flash from a star.

You can see this galaxy from Earth. It is one of the easiest spiral galaxies to find. You can see it with binoculars near the star Beta Ceti. If you have a large telescope, you can see more. A telescope with a 300 mm diameter works well. You might see a dark dust lane in the northwest. Many small satellite galaxies also orbit around it. Some of these small galaxies might crash into the main one soon. This keeps the galaxy changing and moving.
