Pictor is a small group of stars in the southern sky.

Its name is Latin for painter. It sits between the bright star Canopus and the Large Magellanic Cloud. This constellation is quite faint to look at. You can find its three brightest stars near the very bright Canopus. It is bordered by several other groups of stars like Columba and Puppis.

Astronomers use the short name "Pic" to talk about it.

Many stars in Pictor have planets orbiting them. One famous star is Beta Pictoris. It is 63.4 light-years away from Earth. This star has a special disk of dust around it. Scientists also found two exoplanets, which are planets outside our solar system, orbiting this star.

Another star called HD 40307 has six planets. One of those is a super-Earth named HD 40307 g. This planet sits in a zone where life might be possible. Kapteyn's Star is also nearby, but its planets were proven not to exist in 2021.

An astronomer named Abbé Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille named this group. He lived in the 18th century. He spent two years at the Cape of Good Hope. During that time, he cataloged 10,000 southern stars. He originally called the group "le Chevalet et la Palette." This means the easel and the palette.

He wanted to honor tools used during the Age of Enlightenment. Later, in 1845, the name was shortened to Pictor. This change was suggested by Sir John Herschel.

There are many interesting things to see in this part of space. One star is Alpha Pictoris, which is 97 light-years away. It is the brightest star in the constellation. Another star, RR Pictoris, is a cataclysmic variable star. In 1925, it flared up as a nova. This means it became very bright before fading away.

There is also a huge galaxy called Pictor A. It is 485 million light-years away. It has a supermassive black hole at its center. This black hole shoots out a jet of plasma that is 800,000 light-years long.

Pictor helps us understand how much is happening in the deep universe. We can see how stars grow and change over time. We can see how black holes can shoot out long jets of energy.

Even a single star can show us how planets form in dust disks. The gamma-ray burst known as GRB 060729 showed us how massive stars can collapse. This event left a glow that lasted for nearly two years. Studying these stars helps us learn about our own home in space.
