It also has a shell of circumstellar gas surrounding it. 
Another star, RR Pictoris, shows how stars can change suddenly. It is a cataclysmic variable star system. This system consists of a white dwarf and a secondary star. They orbit each other very closely every 3.48 hours. The secondary star fills its Roche lobe, which is the region where its gravity dominates. This causes stellar material to transfer onto an accretion disk around the white dwarf. When this material reaches a critical mass, it ignites. This event is called a nova. In 1925, RR Pictoris flared up and reached a visual magnitude of 1.2. It eventually faded until it was invisible to the naked eye. 
Beta Pictoris is a very important star for studying planets. It is a white main-sequence star located 63.4 light-years away. In 1984, it was the first star discovered to have a debris disk. This is a disk of dust surrounding the star. Scientists have found two exoplanets orbiting between 2.7 and 8 astronomical units from the star. These planets have masses over ten times that of Jupiter. One was found using direct imagery with the Very Large Telescope in 2009. The other was found using doppler spectroscopy in August 2009. 
Several other stars in Pictor host planetary systems. The star HD 40307 is an orange dwarf located 42 light-years away. It has six known super-Earth planets orbiting it. One planet, HD 40307 g, sits in the circumstellar habitable zone. This is the area around a star where life might be possible. The star HD 41004 is a complex binary system about 139 light-years away. Its primary star is orbited by a planet 2.65 times the mass of Jupiter. Its secondary star is orbited by a brown dwarf. Kapteyn's Star is also a nearby red dwarf located only 12.76 light-years away. While scientists thought it had two super-Earths in 2014, this was disproven in 2021. 
Deep-space objects in Pictor show the power of the universe. Pictor A is a radio galaxy located 485 million light-years away. It contains a supermassive black hole at its center. This black hole shoots out a relativistic jet of plasma. This jet is 800,000 light-years long. There is also a massive galaxy cluster called SPT-CL J0546-5345. It is located about 7 billion light-years away. This cluster has a mass equivalent to about 800 trillion suns. Finally, a gamma-ray burst called GRB 060729 occurred in this region. This burst likely came from a type Ic supernova. It left an X-ray afterglow that lasted for nearly two years.
