Hydrus is a small constellation found in the deep southern sky.

Its name means "male water snake" in Latin. This name helps people tell it apart from Hydra, which is a much larger female water snake. Because it is so far south, it stays below the horizon for most people in the Northern Hemisphere. It covers about 243 square degrees of the night sky. This makes it the 61st largest of the 88 official constellations.

Many interesting stars live within these borders. Beta Hydri is the brightest star in the group. It is a subgiant star, which means it is slightly older than our Sun. This star is about 24 light-years away from Earth. It is also the closest bright star to the south celestial pole. Another star, Gamma Hydri, is a red giant. This star is 60 times the diameter of our Sun. It is a variable star, which means its brightness pulses over time.

People have been studying these stars for a long time. The constellation was created by Petrus Plancius. He used observations from explorers Pieter Dirkszoon Keyser and Frederick de Houtman. It first appeared on a celestial globe in Amsterdam in late 1597. Later, Johann Bayer included it in his famous atlas called Uranometria in 1603. In 1756, the astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille charted the brighter stars. He gave them special names to help scientists identify them.

Scientists have found many special objects in this area. A star called HD 10180 might have up to nine planets. This is a huge number of companions for one star. Another star, VW Hydri, is a dwarf nova. This is a system where a white dwarf star pulls matter from a neighbor. There is also a beautiful object called the White Rose Galaxy. It is a giant spiral galaxy located 345 million light-years away. It has shells that look like the petals of a rose.

Learning about Hydrus helps us understand our own place in space. The star Beta Hydri is thought to be between 6.4 and 7.1 billion years old. It looks a bit like what our Sun might look like in the far future. This happens because the star is using up its hydrogen fuel. We can also see parts of the Large Magellanic Cloud here. This is a galaxy that sits near our own Milky Way. Looking at Hydrus is like looking at a map of how stars change.
