Hydrus is a small group of stars in the deep southern sky.

Its name means "male water snake." This helps tell it apart from Hydra, which is a much larger female snake.

Most people in the Northern Hemisphere cannot see it because it stays below the horizon.

Many interesting stars live in this area. Beta Hydri is the brightest star in the group. It is a subgiant star, which means it is slightly older than our Sun. It is also the closest bright star to the south celestial pole. Another star, Gamma Hydri, is a red giant. This star is huge. It is 60 times wider than our Sun.

Scientists have also found planets around stars in Hydrus. One star, HD 10180, might have up to nine planets. This is a very large number of planets for one star system. There are also far-away objects like the White Rose Galaxy. This galaxy is a giant spiral shaped like rose petals. It is very far away from our Solar System.
