Shapley Supercluster

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Shapley Supercluster is a huge collection of galaxies. It is one of the largest groups in the whole universe. Most things in space move away from each other as the universe grows. However, this group is different because it pulls itself together. It acts like a single unit because of gravity. This makes it a very crowded area of space. It sits in the constellation of Centaurus.

This group works by pulling galaxies toward its center. This happens because the supercluster has a lot of mass. The core is very dense and heavy. It includes eleven different clusters and groups of galaxies. Some of these, like A3558 and A3528, are even merging together. This merging creates complex shapes in the center. The core is likely the largest collapsing core in our local universe.

Harlow Shapley first found this area in 1930. He worked at the Harvard College Observatory. He used a 24-inch telescope in South Africa. By 1932, he found 76,000 galaxies in the southern sky. He noticed a very long and crowded group in Centaurus. He thought its long shape was very interesting. Later, Somak Raychaudhury named the supercluster after him.

The supercluster is very far from our home. It is about 650 million light-years away. This distance is about 231 megaparsecs. The supercluster is also very large in size. It covers a wide area of space. It includes many different galaxy clusters like A3556 and A3560. These clusters have huge amounts of mass.

This group affects how our own galaxy moves. Our galaxy is part of the Milky Way. The Milky Way is moving toward the Shapley Supercluster. Other nearby groups are also moving toward it. This movement is part of a larger pattern in space. Some scientists think this group helps pull our galaxy along. It acts like a giant point of gravity for everything nearby.
