Supercluster

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Superclusters are among the largest known structures in our universe. They are huge collections of smaller galaxy groups and clusters. Most galaxies are not spread out evenly across space. Instead, they are drawn together into these massive shapes. This means the universe has a very bumpy layout.

Between these large structures lie huge empty spots called voids. These voids are places where very few galaxies exist. Scientists think there are about 10 million superclusters in the observable universe.

To understand how they work, we can look at how they are built. First, galaxies gather into small groups with dozens of members. These groups then pull together to form galaxy clusters. Some clusters can hold several thousand galaxies at once. These clusters then join to form even larger superclusters.

Because superclusters are so large and have low density, they expand with the Hubble expansion. They can take many shapes, like long chains, strands, or thin sheets. Some even look like massive walls or filaments.

People first thought these structures existed because of George Abell. In 1958, he created a catalogue of galaxy clusters. He called these large structures "second-order clusters." This name meant they were clusters made of other clusters.

By studying them, scientists can learn about the early universe. They look at how galaxies rotate within these groups. This helps them understand the initial conditions of the cosmos. It shows how everything began to form long ago.

There are many different superclusters to know about. Our own home is part of the Laniakea Supercluster. This structure is about 500 million light-years long. Within Laniakea, we find the Virgo Supercluster. The Virgo Supercluster contains our Milky Way galaxy. It is thought to have over 47,000 galaxies inside it.

Another huge one is the Einasto Supercluster. It was discovered in 2023 using Sloan Digital Sky Survey images. It may be the most massive supercluster found so far.

Superclusters help us see how everything in space is linked. You can think of them like a giant cosmic map. Our galaxy is a tiny part of a small group. That group is part of a cluster, which is in a supercluster. This continues until you reach these massive structures.

They can span between 100 million and 10 billion light-years. They cover more than 5% of the observable universe. Even though they are huge, they are still part of a much larger story.
