Centaurus A

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Centaurus A is a very special galaxy in the sky.

It is also known as NGC 5128 or Caldwell 77. This galaxy is the closest radio galaxy to our Earth. It is also the closest BL Lac object. Astronomers study its center very closely because it is so active. It is the fifth-brightest galaxy in the entire sky.

People in the southern hemisphere can see it easily. It is a wonderful target for amateur astronomers to find.

A huge black hole sits at the very center. This black hole has a mass of 55 million solar masses. It creates a powerful thing called a relativistic jet. This jet shoots out from the center of the galaxy. The inner parts of the jet move very fast. They move at about half the speed of light.

Farther out, the jet hits surrounding gases. This collision creates X-rays and highly energetic particles. The radio jets are over a million light-years long. The X-ray jets are shorter, reaching thousands of light-years.

People have been looking at this galaxy for a long time. James Dunlop discovered it in 1826. He was a Scottish astronomer in Australia. In 1847, John Herschel saw its strange shape. He described it as two shapes separated by a dark band. In 1949, scientists found it was a radio source. Later, in 1954, experts suggested the galaxy had a merger. They thought a large elliptical galaxy hit a small spiral galaxy. This event likely created the strange shape we see today.

Many tools help us learn about Centaurus A. The Hubble Space Telescope found blue stars in 2000. The Chandra X-ray Observatory found many new points of light in 1999. In 2006, the Spitzer Space Telescope saw a shape made of dust. The H.E.S.S. Observatory found gamma rays in 2009.

We even see stars exploding there. A supernova named SN 1986G was found in 1986. Another one called SN 2016adj was found in 2016.

Centaurus A helps us understand how galaxies change. It is part of the Centaurus A/M83 Group. This group is located in the Virgo Supercluster. The galaxy is a starburst galaxy. This means it has a huge burst of new star formation. This burst likely happened because of the old galactic collision.

Watching it helps scientists learn about how big galaxies grow. It is like seeing a giant cosmic puzzle being put together.
