space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Centaurus A is a very special galaxy.

A man named James Dunlop found it in 1826. It is one of the brightest galaxies in our sky.

You can see it with large binoculars if you are in the southern part of the world.

This galaxy looks strange. It has a dark band of dust across its middle. Scientists think this happened because of a merger. A merger is when two galaxies crash into each other. A large elliptical galaxy likely hit a smaller spiral galaxy. This crash caused a burst of new stars to form.

A huge black hole lives at the center. It is 55 million times heavier than our Sun. This black hole shoots out long jets of power. These jets move at half the speed of light.

The radio jets are over a million light-years long. The X-ray jets are much shorter. They are thousands of light-years long. These jets happen when the black hole lets out energy. The jets also hit gas to make X-rays.
