NGC 1275 is a very large galaxy.

It is part of the Perseus Cluster. This cluster is a big group of galaxies. William Herschel found this galaxy in 1786.

This galaxy is actually two parts. One part is a big central galaxy. The other part is a fast moving system. This system moves at 3,000 km/s. It is moving toward the main galaxy. It is also merging with the cluster. This movement strips gas away. It also makes many new stars.

The galaxy has long threads of gas. These threads are very thin. They can be 20,000 light-years long. They are only 200 light-years wide. These threads might stay together because of magnetic fields.

A supermassive black hole is in the center. This is a black hole with a huge mass. It has a disk of gas spinning around it. This black hole and the gas disk weigh 800 million solar masses. Scientists have seen three supernovae here. A supernova is a huge star explosion. These happened in 1968, 2005, and 2024.
