This is a very large group of stars.

NGC 1275 is a very large galaxy.
This galaxy is actually two parts. One part is a big central galaxy. The other part is a fast moving system. This system moves at 3,000 km/s. It is moving toward the main galaxy. It is also merging with the cluster. This movement strips gas away. It also makes many new stars.

A supermassive black hole is in the center. This is a black hole with a huge mass. It has a disk of gas spinning around it. This black hole and the gas disk weigh 800 million solar masses. Scientists have seen three supernovae here. A supernova is a huge star explosion. These happened in 1968, 2005, and 2024.
NGC 1275 is a very special galaxy.

This galaxy is actually two different systems. One is a large central galaxy. The other is a high velocity system. This second system is moving very fast. It travels at 3,000 km/s toward the main galaxy. It is currently merging with the Perseus Cluster. This movement causes ram pressure. This pressure strips gas away from the system. It also creates many new stars. The two parts stay far apart for now. They are at least 200,000 light-years from each other.
There are long threads of gas in this galaxy. These are called spectral line emitting filaments. They look like thin threads stretching through space. Each thread is only 200 light-years wide. They can grow up to 20,000 light-years long. One thread can hold a million times the mass of our Sun. These threads are much cooler than the gas around them. Scientists wonder how they stay together. Weak magnetic fields might hold the gas in place. These fields are much weaker than Earth's field.
A supermassive black hole lives in the center. This black hole is very large. It has a spinning disk of molecular gas around it. The center of the galaxy has a huge mass. This mass is about 800 million solar masses. This number includes the black hole and the gas disk. The black hole sends out strong jets of particles. These jets heat the gas to 60 million degrees Celsius. This hot gas shines with X-ray light.
People have studied this galaxy for a long time. William Herschel discovered it on 17 October 1786. We have also seen stars explode there. These explosions are called supernovae. Three have been seen in this galaxy so far. Miklós Lovas found one in 1968. Jack Newton, Mike Peoples, and Tim Puckett found another in 2005. The last one was found by GOTO in 2024. These events help us learn about space.
NGC 1275 is a remarkable type 1.5 Seyfert galaxy. It is located about 225 million light-years from Earth. You can find it in the direction of the constellation Perseus.
This galaxy is actually made of two different systems. One is a large central galaxy known as a type-cD galaxy. The other is called a high velocity system, or HVS. The HVS is moving toward the main system at 3,000 km/s. It is believed to be merging with the Perseus Cluster. This HVS does not touch the central cD galaxy yet. It stays at least 200,000 light-years away from it. However, the movement still causes big changes. Tidal interactions are disrupting the HVS. Also, ram pressure from the intracluster medium is stripping its gas. This process also creates large amounts of star formation.
One of the most interesting parts of NGC 1275 is its gas. The galaxy contains 13 billion solar masses of molecular hydrogen. This hydrogen seems to be falling in from the Perseus Cluster. This process is called a cooling flow. The infalling gas feeds the active nucleus of the galaxy. It also provides fuel for making many new stars.
There are also strange, long threads of gas in the galaxy. Scientists call these spectral line emitting filaments. These filaments stretch out into the hot gas of the cluster. Each thread is quite thin, only about 200 light-years wide. They can be very straight and long. Some reach up to 20,000 light-years in length. A single thread can contain one million times the mass of the Sun. These filaments are much cooler than the gas around them. Scientists are not sure how they stay together for so long. They wonder why the gas does not warm up or collapse into stars. One idea is that weak magnetic fields hold the gas together. These fields are only one-ten-thousandth the strength of Earth's magnetic field.
At the very center of NGC 1275, there is a supermassive black hole. We know it is there because the nucleus is active. A rotating disk of molecular gas surrounds this black hole. Astronomers used the Gemini North telescope to look at this disk. They used a tool called adaptive optics to get a clear view. They studied how the disk rotates. They found the central mass is about 800 million solar masses. This mass includes both the black hole and the inner gas disk.
Humans have been observing this galaxy for a long time. The German-British astronomer William Herschel discovered it on 17 October 1786. Since then, we have seen spectacular events called supernovae. A supernova is a massive star explosion. Three supernovae have been observed in NGC 1275 so far. The first was SN 1968A, discovered by Miklós Lovas on 25 January 1968. The second was SN 2005mz, a Type Ia supernova. Jack Newton, Mike Peoples, and Tim Puckett found it on 31 December 2005. The third was SN 2024xav, a Type II-P supernova. GOTO discovered this one on 2 October 2024.
NGC 1275 helps us understand how galaxies interact and grow. It shows how a black hole can change its entire environment. The jets from the center heat the gas to incredible temperatures. The movement of the HVS shows how galaxies merge within a cluster. Even the strange gas filaments tell us about the invisible forces in space. By studying these details, scientists learn more about the life of galaxies and the clusters they live in.
