Perseus Cluster

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Perseus Cluster is a huge group of galaxies.

It is in the Perseus constellation. This cluster is one of the most massive things in space. It holds thousands of galaxies. These galaxies sit in a big cloud of very hot gas.

One galaxy sits at the center. Its name is NGC 1275. This galaxy makes bubbles of plasma. Plasma is a special kind of gas. These bubbles push the hot gas away. This makes holes in X-ray images.

These bubbles also make sound waves. The waves move through the gas like ripples in a pond. In 2003, scientists found these notes. They used a tool called Chandra to look closely. The notes are very deep. They are 57 octaves below a piano key. No human can hear them. The notes take 9.6 million years to pass.

NASA even turned this data into sound. This is called sonification. It helps us study the black hole at the center. The cluster is 863 units wide. It moves away at a speed of 5,366 km/s.
