Perseus Cluster

space Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Perseus Cluster is a huge group of galaxies.

It sits in the constellation Perseus. This cluster is one of the most massive things in space. It holds thousands of galaxies. These galaxies live in a giant cloud of very hot gas. This gas is millions of degrees hot. The cluster is 863 units wide. It also moves away at a speed of 5,366 km/s.

Inside the cluster, things are always moving. A galaxy named NGC 1275 sits at the center. This galaxy has a radio source called 3C 84. This source blows bubbles of plasma into the cluster. Plasma is a special kind of gas. These bubbles push the hot X-ray gas away. This creates holes in X-ray images. We call these radio bubbles because they send out radio waves.

Scientists first saw this cluster using X-rays. An Aerobee rocket flight found it on March 1, 1970. This first signal was called Per XR-1. In 1971, people reported the signal might come from NGC 1275. Later, a tool named Uhuru helped confirm this. It showed the source was indeed inside the cluster. This helped us understand the center of the group.

These bubbles also make very deep sound waves. In 2003, Andrew Fabian led a team at Cambridge University. They used the Chandra tool for 53 hours. They found one of the deepest notes ever detected. These notes are 57 octaves below a middle piano key. One note takes 9.6 million years to pass. The bubbles make ripples in the gas. This happens because the gas density changes.

We can use data to hear these space sounds. This is called sonification. NASA reported this in May 2022. They turned pressure waves into sound. This helps us study the black hole at the center. A similar thing happens in the Virgo Cluster. That cluster has a galaxy called Messier 87. It also has a supermassive black hole.
