Cygnus A is a very bright radio galaxy.

A radio galaxy sends out strong radio signals. Grote Reber first found this source in 1939. It has a supermassive black hole at its center. This black hole is part of an active galactic nucleus, or AGN. The AGN makes powerful jets. These jets shoot out in two opposite directions. They are much longer than the galaxy itself.

At the ends of the jets are hotspots. These hotspots form when jet material hits gas in space. This gas is called the intergalactic medium. The jets also heat these hotspots with X-rays. This heat pushes the gas away. It carves out large holes in the gas. The biggest hole is in the eastern lobe. It is about 11,700 lightyears wide. It is also 44,000 lightyears deep. Cygnus A lives in a large cluster of galaxies. This cluster has around 200 neighbors. The whole cluster is currently merging with others. Scientists can see this through X-ray study.
