It sits in the middle of a large cluster. This cluster is called Abell 2029. IC 1101 is a supergiant galaxy. This means it is very large and bright. It has a golden yellow color. This is because its stars are very old. Some stars are seven billion years older than our Sun.

At its center is a supermassive black hole. This is a black hole with a huge mass. It is one of the largest ever found. The galaxy has a very big core. This core is the largest known in any galaxy. It might have grown by eating other galaxies. It may have merged with ten or more others. This process can fling stars out of the center. This would explain why the core is so empty. IC 1101 also has a massive halo. This halo is a wide area of light. It is made of stars that fly free. These stars are not bound to any single galaxy.
