NGC 6946

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

NGC 6946 is a big spiral galaxy. It is shaped like a spinning disk. It has a bright center called a nucleus. This galaxy sits between two star groups. These groups are named Cepheus and Cygnus. It is about 25.2 million light-years away.

Many people call it the Fireworks Galaxy. This is because stars explode there often. These explosions are called supernovae. We have seen ten supernovae there since 1917. This is ten times more than our Milky Way galaxy.

This galaxy is also a starburst galaxy. This means it makes new stars very fast. A small bar in the center helps. It moves gas into the middle to make stars.

One star was very special. It was a yellow hypergiant star. It became one million times brighter than the Sun. Then the star died. It may have left behind a black hole. This is a place with very strong pull. Now, bits of debris fall into it. Scientists call this object N6946-BH1.
