Messier 106 is a big spiral galaxy.

It sits in the constellation Canes Venatici. Pierre Méchain found it in 1781. This galaxy is very large and bright. It is like the Andromeda Galaxy. It is 22 to 25 million light-years away.

At its center is a supermassive black hole. This is a huge, heavy spot. It pulls on a disk of gas. We can see this gas move with radio tools. M106 also has two strange arms. We see these arms with X-ray telescopes.

Scientists use a special tool called a water megamaser. This works like a laser but uses microwave light. It helps us measure how far away galaxies are. This helps us map the whole universe.

Two big star deaths happened here too. These are called supernovae. One happened in 1981. The other happened in 2014.

M106 might have a friend. A galaxy called NGC 4217 may be near it.
