Messier 106 is a huge and bright spiral galaxy.

It sits in the constellation Canes Venatici. This galaxy is very similar to the Andromeda Galaxy. It is located about 22 to 25 million light-years away from Earth. Scientists call this type of galaxy an intermediate spiral galaxy. It is one of the largest and brightest galaxies nearby. This galaxy is very important for learning about space.

At the center of M106 is a supermassive black hole. This is a very heavy spot that pulls on things. A disk of molecular gas orbits around this center. We can see this gas move using radio-wavelength observations. This movement shows us the black hole is really there. The galaxy also has two special arms. These are called anomalous arms. We can only see them with an X-ray telescope.

M106 has a very cool feature called a water vapor megamaser.

A megamaser works like a laser. However, it uses microwave light instead of visible light. It happens on a very large galactic scale. This tool helps scientists see warm and dense gas. It also helps us study the disks around active galaxies. These masers helped us measure distances to galaxies for the first time.

Pierre Méchain discovered this galaxy in 1781.

M106 helps us build a cosmic distance ladder. This is a way to measure how far things are. The galaxy has Cepheid variables inside it. These are stars that help us find distances. They have metallicities similar to our own Milky Way. This helps us fix measurements for other galaxies too.

We can also see big star deaths in this galaxy. These events are called supernovae. One happened in 1981 and was called SN 1981K.

Another one called SN 2014bc was found in 2014. The 2014 event was found by the PS1 Science Consortium 3Pi survey. M106 might also have a companion galaxy. This possible friend is named NGC 4217. It is amazing to see how much is happening in one galaxy.
