space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some galaxies have very bright centers. These are called Seyfert galaxies. They are named after Carl Seyfert. He first described them in 1943.

Most Seyfert galaxies look like normal spiral galaxies. However, their centers are very bright. This center is called an active galactic nucleus. This is a small area that gives off a lot of light.

A supermassive black hole lives at the center. This is a giant black hole with huge mass. It is surrounded by an accretion disc. This is a disc of material falling in. As the material falls, it gives off ultraviolet radiation. This light is very strong.

Scientists study the light from these centers. They look at emission lines. These are bright lines of light from gases like hydrogen and oxygen. Some galaxies show broad lines. These come from gas moving fast near the black hole. Other galaxies show narrow lines. These come from gas moving slower further away.
