NGC 5548

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

NGC 5548 is a very bright galaxy. It is in the constellation Boötes. It is 245 million light years away. This galaxy has a very active center. This center is called a nucleus.

A huge black hole sits at the core. It is a supermassive black hole. This black hole is 65 million times the mass of our Sun. Matter flows onto the black hole. It forms a flat, spinning disk. This is called an accretion disk.

As material moves in the disk, it gets very hot. The disk has a thick part called a corona. This corona sends out X-rays. These X-rays hit the disk. This turns the light into heat. This process makes the center glow brightly.

A wind also flows out from the center. This wind moves away from the disk. It moves in thin lines. The wind is made of ionized matter. This matter is a hot gas. The galaxy also has spiral arms. It may have hit another galaxy a long time ago.
