Omega Centauri is a giant ball of stars.

Scientists call this a globular cluster. It is in the constellation Centaurus. This cluster is very big. It is about 150 light-years across. It is the largest cluster in our Milky Way galaxy.

It is also very heavy. It has about 10 million stars. It is 12 billion years old. You can see it with your own eyes. In a dark place, it looks as large as the Moon.

Some people think it was not always a cluster. They think it was once a small dwarf galaxy. This small galaxy might have broken apart. The Milky Way may have taken it in. This would explain why its stars are many different ages.

There is a mystery in the center. Some studies show a heavy object there. This might be an intermediate-mass black hole. A black hole is a place with very strong pull.

Other scientists are not sure. They say the stars do not move that way. They are still studying this big, bright group of stars.
