It sits in a group of stars called Sagittarius. People first found it in 1745. Some people call it the Swan Nebula. Others call it the Lobster Nebula. It is a very big place. It is 15 light-years wide. It is 5,000 to 6,000 light-years from Earth.

This nebula is a place where stars are born. It has many hot, young stars inside. These stars give off radiation. This radiation makes the gas in the cloud shine. There are many stars in the nebula. Some are already born. More than a thousand others are still forming. This makes the nebula very massive.

In 2020, a tool called SOFIA looked at it. SOFIA uses infrared light to see things. This light helps us see dust and gas. The tool found nine new protostars. A protostar is a star that is still growing. The images show blue gas and green dust. These parts help make the swan shape.
