Lagoon Nebula

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A giant cloud of gas sits in space. It is called the Lagoon Nebula.

This cloud is in the Sagittarius constellation. It is very far away. It is 4,000 to 6,000 light-years from Earth. Giovanni Hodierna found it in 1654. You can see it with just your eyes. It is one of only two star-forming nebulae like this. The other one is the Orion Nebula.

Long photos show the cloud as pink. But telescopes show it as gray. This happens because our eyes struggle with low light. The cloud has many parts. It has a shape like a funnel. A hot O-type star makes this shape. There is also an Hourglass Nebula in the center.

This cloud is a busy place where stars are born. Scientists found four Herbig–Haro objects there. These are signs of new stars growing. The nebula also holds a group of young stars. We call this group NGC 6530. It is a very big and active place in our sky.
