space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Tarantula Nebula is a giant cloud in space.

It sits in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This cloud is very bright. It is so bright that it could cast shadows on Earth. That would happen if it were closer to us. It is a very busy place for making stars.

At the center is a group of stars called NGC 2070. A part of this group is named R136. These stars give off much of the power for the nebula. The nebula is also home to a group called Hodge 301. Some big stars in that group have already exploded. These explosions are called supernovae. One famous explosion, Supernova 1987A, happened near the edge of the nebula.

Scientists also found a black hole here.

This was the first one found outside our own galaxy that is quiet. It does not give off much light. This black hole orbits a large blue star. The star is named VFTS 243. The black hole is at least nine times heavier than our Sun.
