A globular cluster is a round group of stars.

Gravity pulls these stars together. This keeps them in a tight ball shape. Some clusters have tens of thousands of stars. Others have many millions of stars.

Long ago, these clusters looked like fuzzy blobs. This was because early telescopes were not very strong. In the 1700s, astronomers used larger tools. They saw that the blobs were actually groups of stars.

One famous group is called Omega Centauri. People once thought it was just a single star.

These clusters are very old. Some are among the oldest things in the universe. They are found in nearly all galaxies. In our Milky Way, they live in the halo. The halo is the outer part of our galaxy.

Scientists use clusters to study space. In 1914, Harlow Shapley studied them. He found that the Sun is not at the center of the Milky Way. He used the clusters to map the galaxy.

Today, we know many more clusters exist. Some galaxies have thousands of them.
