Open cluster

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An open cluster is a group of stars. These stars live close together in space. They all come from the same giant molecular cloud. A molecular cloud is a huge cloud of gas and dust.

Because they share a cloud, the stars have the same age. They also have the same chemical makeup. This makes them very helpful for scientists to study.

Stars in a cluster stay close because of gravity. Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward each other.

However, these groups are loosely held together. Other clouds or clusters can bump into them. This can pull the stars apart. When this happens, the stars drift away into the galaxy. Most open clusters only last a few hundred million years.

Some clusters are easy to see. You can see the Pleiades with just your eyes.

Other clusters need a telescope to see clearly. Long ago, people thought these clusters were just fuzzy spots. Then, Galileo used a telescope to see the many stars inside. He found that they were not just single lights. They were beautiful groups of stars.
