A dwarf galaxy is a small group of stars.

They have fewer stars than the Milky Way. Our home has 100 to 400 billion stars. A dwarf galaxy might have only 1,000 stars. Some have billions of stars.

The Large Magellanic Cloud is a big one. It has over 30 billion stars. It orbits the Milky Way closely.

Big galaxies can change how dwarf galaxies grow. They can pull on them with gravity. This pull can even rip a small galaxy apart. Some dwarf galaxies form when big galaxies crash. These are called tidal dwarf galaxies.

Some dwarf galaxies look very blue.

Blue compact dwarf galaxies have many young, hot stars. These stars make the galaxy look bright blue. Other types are very dim. Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies have very few stars. They are the faintest galaxies in space. They also have a lot of dark matter. This is a type of matter we cannot see.

Some dwarf galaxies are very tight and dense. We call these ultra-compact dwarfs. They pack many stars into a small space.
