Blue compact dwarf galaxies (BCD) are particularly interesting. They contain large clusters of young, hot, massive stars. These stars are often blue, which gives the whole galaxy a blue color. 
Some dwarf galaxies are incredibly faint. Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs) are the faintest galaxies in the universe. They contain only a few hundred to 100,000 stars. 
Other dwarf galaxies are extremely dense. Ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCD) were discovered in the 2000s. They are very small, often only about 200 light years across, but they hold about 100 million stars. 
History and interactions also shape these galaxies. Many dwarf galaxies in our Local Group orbit larger neighbors like the Milky Way or the Andromeda Galaxy. Some were created by galactic tides. Tidal dwarf galaxies form when large galaxies collide. During these collisions, gravitational masses interact and pull streams of material away from the parent galaxies. 
Studying these small neighbors provides deep insights into the cosmos. More than 20 known dwarf galaxies orbit the Milky Way. Some, like the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy, allow scientists to test the standard cosmological model. Even the massive Omega Centauri cluster might actually be the remaining core of a dwarf galaxy that the Milky Way absorbed long ago. By watching how dwarf galaxies move and change, astronomers learn how gravity and environment shape everything in space.
