Because of him, the galaxy now carries his name.

The LMC is the fourth-largest galaxy in the Local Group. It follows the Andromeda Galaxy, the Milky Way, and the Triangulum Galaxy in size. It has only about one-hundredth the mass of the Milky Way.

These interactions involve the gravitational pull from the Milky Way and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). This gravity likely pulled on the LMC and warped its spiral arms. The galaxy is also tilted at an inclination of 35 degrees. This means it does not lie flat relative to our view.

Recent discoveries have revealed massive objects within the LMC. In November 2021, astronomers used the Very Large Telescope in Chile to find a black hole. This black hole's gravity is influenced by a nearby star.

More significantly, researchers announced evidence for a supermassive black hole in March 2025. This object is located near the center of the galaxy. It has an estimated mass 600,000 times that of our Sun. This makes it the second-closest supermassive black hole to us, after Sagittarius A*.
