Serpens is a unique group of stars in the northern sky.

Most constellations look like one single shape. Serpens is different because it is split into two separate parts. One part is the head, called Serpens Caput.

The other part is the tail, called Serpens Cauda.

The constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent-Bearer, sits right between these two halves. It looks like the man is holding the snake. This makes Serpens the only modern constellation divided into two disconnected regions. It is the 23rd largest constellation out of the 88 known ones.

Many amazing things happen within these star boundaries. In the head, the brightest star is Alpha Serpentis. This is a red giant star named Unukalhai.

It is easy to see even if there is light in your city. Near this star, you can find a cluster of stars called Messier 5.

In the tail, the Milky Way path passes through the area. This brings many deep-sky objects to the region. You can find the Eagle Nebula here.

This nebula contains the famous Pillars of Creation. These are three large clouds of dust. They were made famous by pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope.

People have looked at these stars for a very long time. The astronomer Ptolemy listed Serpens in the 2nd century.

In Greek myths, the snake belongs to a healer named Asclepius. Legend says he learned to bring life back using a special herb. This is why snakes are symbols of rebirth. In Chinese astronomy, these stars told a different story. They represented a wall around a marketplace called Tianshi. Other stars in the tail represented jewel shops and a market office.

There are many special objects to study in Serpens. You can find Hoag's Object, which is a very rare ring galaxy.

There is also the Red Square Nebula. This is one of the few objects that looks like a square. Scientists also study the Seyfert's Sextet, a very dense cluster of galaxies.

In the head, the star Delta Serpentis is actually a system of four stars. Another system, PSR B1534+11, has two neutron stars. This system helped scientists test Albert Einstein's ideas about space. Even the star VY Serpentis is interesting because its brightness changes over time.

Looking at Serpens helps us understand how the universe works. The way the stars move shows us how gravity pulls on things. The different types of stars, like red giants, show how stars age. For example, Alpha Serpentis is a large, older star. Other stars, like the ones in the Eagle Nebula, are places where new stars are born.

Seeing these shapes in the sky connects us to ancient people. They used the same stars to tell stories and track time. Today, we use telescopes to see the deep secrets hidden in the serpent's tail.
