Andromeda is a huge group of stars in the night sky.

It is one of the 88 modern constellations used by astronomers today. This group is very large, covering 722 square degrees. That is over 1,400 times the size of a full moon. It is also 55% the size of the largest constellation, Hydra.

You can see it best during autumn evenings in the Northern Hemisphere. People in the south might not see it at all. It stays below the horizon for those living far south of 40 degrees latitude.

Many stars make up this pattern in the sky. The brightest star is Alpheratz, which is a binary star. A binary star is actually two stars orbiting each other. Alpheratz is 97 light-years away from Earth. Another star is called Almach, which is a colorful bright giant.

It is a multiple star system located 358 light-years away. You might also notice Mirach, which is a red giant star. It is 198 light-years away and has a planet orbiting it. These stars help create the shape of the constellation.

Long ago, people used myths to explain these stars. The name comes from a Greek story about a princess. In the myth, Andromeda was the daughter of Queen Cassiopeia. She was chained to a rock to face a sea monster named Cetus.

A hero named Perseus eventually saved her from the monster. After she died, the goddess Athena placed her in the sky. This was done to honor her memory. Other cultures had different stories for these same stars.

Ancient astronomers studied Andromeda for a very long time. Ptolemy listed it as one of his 48 original constellations.

In Chinese astronomy, these stars were part of four different groups. One group was called Kui, which meant "Legs." In the 1700s, an astronomer named Johann Bode made a new pattern. He called it Honores Friderici to honor a King of Prussia. However, people soon stopped using that name. The International Astronomical Union now officially recognizes Andromeda.

Andromeda holds some of the most amazing objects in space. The most famous is the Andromeda Galaxy, also called M31.

It is a spiral galaxy and the closest one to our Milky Way. You can even see it with just your eyes. Other smaller galaxies, like M110 and M32, live near it.

If you use a telescope, you can find the Blue Snowball Nebula. This is a blue, circular object in the sky.
