Andromeda is a famous figure from Greek mythology. She was the daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia of Aethiopia.

The story begins when Cassiopeia makes a boast. She claims she or her daughter is more beautiful than the Nereids. This pride is called hubris, which is a type of arrogance that upsets the gods. To punish the queen, the god Poseidon sends a sea monster named Cetus to the coast. The monster causes great trouble for the people living there.

To stop the monster, the royal family must make a sacrifice. An oracle says Andromeda must be chained to a rock by the sea in Jaffa.

While she is waiting, a hero named Perseus flies nearby. He has just finished a quest to defeat the Gorgon Medusa. He carries Medusa's head, which can turn living things to stone. Perseus sees Andromeda and falls in love with her. He promises to save her if the king lets him marry her. Perseus uses the head to turn the sea monster to stone.

After the rescue, Perseus and Andromeda marry. They travel to the island of Seriphos and later to Argos.

Perseus eventually becomes the king of Tiryns. The myth tells that they had many children together. These included six sons named Perses, Alcaeus, Heleus, Mestor, Sthenelus, and Electryon. They also had a daughter named Gorgophone. Their descendants would go on to rule places like Mycenae. Even the famous hero Heracles is said to be a descendant of their family.

This ancient story has stayed popular for a very long time. Artists since classical antiquity have used it in pottery, mosaics, and paintings.

During the Renaissance, people became interested in the story again through the writings of Ovid. The tale has appeared in many forms like operas, novels, and films. Some people have noted that artists often show the princess as white, even though Ovid's account describes her differently. Others say the art often focuses on the male hero saving the female character.

We can still see this story when we look at the night sky. The stars contain several constellations named after these figures. The constellation Andromeda is named after the princess herself.

You can also find Perseus, Cassiopeia, and the winged horse Pegasus in the northern sky. Even the sea monster Cetus and the fish of Pisces are part of this celestial map. The story of Andromeda is a major part of how we name the stars. It links ancient legends to the science of astronomy we study today.
