He was a demigod, which means he had one god parent and one human parent. His father was the god Zeus and his mother was a mortal named Danaë. Because of his family, he was related to the famous hero Heracles. Some people think his name might come from a Greek word meaning "to destroy." This would make him a "sacker of cities" or a strong soldier.

Perseus had a very difficult start in life. His grandfather, King Acrisius of Argos, was told a prophecy. The prophecy said that his grandson would one day kill him. To stop this, Acrisius locked Danaë in a bronze tower. Later, he put Danaë and the baby Perseus in a wooden chest. They were cast into the sea to drift away.

A fisherman named Dictys found them on the island of Seriphos. He raised Perseus to be a man on that island.

As Perseus grew up, he faced a hard job from King Polydectes. The king wanted to get rid of Perseus. He asked Perseus to bring him the head of Medusa. Medusa was a Gorgon monster with snakes for hair. Her gaze could turn any person into stone.

To help him, the gods sent gifts. Hermes gave him winged sandals to fly and a sword. Athena gave him a polished shield to use as a mirror. This way, he could see Medusa without looking at her directly. He also received a helmet to make him invisible.

Perseus used these tools to find the Gorgons on the island of Sarpedon. He succeeded in his quest and took Medusa's head. On his journey home, he saw a princess named Andromeda. She was tied to a rock to be eaten by a sea monster named Cetus.
