He was the son of Aeson, the rightful king of Iolcos. A man named Pelias had taken the throne from Aeson. Pelias was a power-hungry leader who wanted to rule all of Thessaly. To stay in power, Pelias told Jason he must complete a hard quest. Jason had to find the Golden Fleece to prove he was king.

This journey would change his life forever.

To start his quest, Jason gathered a group of heroes. They were called the Argonauts after their ship, the Argo. This crew included many famous names like Heracles and the musician Orpheus. They sailed through many dangerous places on their way to find the fleece. On the island of Lemnos, they met a group of women. Later, they fought six-armed giants called the Gegeines near Bear Mountain. The journey was not easy and brought many hard jobs to the crew.

In the land of Colchis, Jason met a sorceress named Medea. She was the granddaughter of the sun-god Helios. Medea fell in love with Jason and decided to help him. King Aeetes said Jason could have the fleece only if he finished three tasks. First, Jason had to plow a field using fire-breathing oxen. Medea gave him a special ointment to protect him from the flames. Next, he had to sow dragon teeth into a field. When warriors grew from the teeth, Jason used a rock to make them fight each other.

The final task was to face a dragon that never slept. This dragon guarded the Golden Fleece. Medea gave Jason a potion made from herbs to help him. He sprayed the dragon, and it fell into a deep sleep. Jason grabbed the Golden Fleece and began his long trip home. The crew had to pass the Clashing Rocks by using a dove to test the way. They also had to sail past the Sirens. Orpheus played his lyre very loudly to drown out the Sirens' songs.

They even had to deal with a bronze man named Talos on Crete.

When Jason finally returned to Iolcus, the story took a sad turn. Medea used her magic to help Jason's father, Aeson, feel young again. However, Pelias's daughters tried to use this magic themselves. They did not realize it was dangerous and died in a cauldron. Because of this, Jason and Medea had to leave and live in Corinth. Later, Jason broke his promises to Medea. This led to more trouble and anger between them. Even though the stories are often sad, Jason remains a famous figure in many films and books today.
