Hercules is one of the largest groups of stars in our night sky.

It ranks as the fifth-largest constellation of the 88 known today. This group of stars covers a huge area of 1225.1 square degrees. That means it takes up about 2.970% of the entire sky. It is a very important place for astronomers to look. Many stars in this area are not very bright to the naked eye. However, it is the largest area that lacks very bright stars. This makes it a unique part of the heavens to study.

Many stars in Hercules work in special ways. Some are binary stars, which means two stars orbit each other. For example, the star Zeta Herculis has two stars that orbit every 34.5 years. Other stars are variable stars that change in brightness. The star Rasalgethi is a triple star system located 359 light-years away. It has a primary star that is a bright giant. This giant star is about 400 times wider than our Sun. Another star in this system orbits the main one every 3600 years.

People have looked at these stars for a very long time. The astronomer Ptolemy listed Hercules in the second century. He included it as one of 48 known constellations. Some think the shape comes from older stories from Babylon. A writer named Gavin White says it might be a version of the "Standing Gods." Other traditions link the stars to the hero Gilgamesh. The constellation is named after the Roman hero Hercules. This hero was adapted from the Greek hero Heracles.

There are many amazing objects hidden deep in this constellation. One is M13, which is a bright globular cluster.

This cluster is a huge ball containing over 300,000 stars. It sits 25,200 light-years away from Earth. You can also find the Hercules Cluster, which is a group of galaxies. There is even a massive structure called the Hercules–Corona Borealis Great Wall. It is known as the largest structure in the universe. Some stars here even have planets orbiting them. We know of fifteen stars in Hercules that host planets.

When you look up, you can imagine the hero in the stars. The traditional view shows Hercules stepping on the head of the dragon Draco. The star Rasalgethi is often seen as the head of the kneeling hero. Another star, Kornephoros, is seen as his club-bearer shoulder. You can see the hero's waist using stars like epsilon and zeta Herculis. Some people use a different map to see the stars. An artist named H.A. Rey suggested using a shape called the Keystone as the head. This helps people find the hero in the dark sky.
