Hoag's Object

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Hoag's Object is a very strange ring galaxy. It sits in the Serpens Caput constellation. This galaxy looks like a nearly perfect circle.

Scientists call it "The most perfect ring galaxy." It is about 600 million light-years away. This object is very special to astronomers. It helps us learn about the shapes of space.

The galaxy has two main parts. There is a yellow nucleus in the middle. This center is made of older stars. A ring of young, hot blue stars circles it.

The ring is very bright. There is a gap between the center and the ring. This gap might hold very faint star clusters. A huge ring of hydrogen gas also surrounds the stars.

Arthur Hoag discovered this object in 1950. He first thought it might be a planetary nebula. A nebula is a cloud of gas in space. He later realized it was a peculiar galaxy.

He once thought a thing called gravitational lensing made the ring. This is when gravity bends light. Later, better telescopes showed the ring has a knotty structure. This proved his first idea was wrong.

This galaxy is truly massive. It has a mass of 700 billion suns. For comparison, our Milky Way is even larger. The Milky Way has 100 to 500 billion stars. It also has a mass of up to 1.54 trillion suns.

Hoag's Object has an inner core diameter of 10 arcseconds. The outer ring is much wider. It has an outer diameter of 45 arcseconds.

Scientists still wonder how it formed. Most ring galaxies form when two galaxies crash. A small galaxy hits a larger disk galaxy. This creates a wave that makes a ring. But we do not see a second galaxy here. We do not see any leftover bits from a crash.

Some think a change called bar instability caused it. This means a galaxy changed its shape. Other experts still disagree on the answer. The mystery of this ring remains.
